But Arlington's beginnings go back to 1562, Jean Ribault, Jacksonville Universitya French Huguenot explorer, landed his boat and founded the first European settlement in the Americas with the development of La Caronine at St. Johns Bluff. Years later, the fort was captured and destroyed by the Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles. Today, La Caroline is the treasured Fort Caroline National Monument, which sits on 680 acres that also encompasses the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve. Both are operated by the National Park Service.
